Tillandsia is a genus of the Bromeliaceae family. Tillandsia are native to forests, mountains, and deserts, of Central and South America, and Mexico and the southern United States in North America. They are all epiphytes, or air-plants, and can be found growing in trees in these tropical and sub-tropical climates. They have no roots but have special hold fasts that do not take in any nutrients. Moisture and nutrients are gathered from the air (dust, decaying leaves and insect matter) through structures on the leaves called trichomes. They are known in particular for their outstanding foliage and inflorescences.

Decorative and hardy Tillandsias add a splash of colour to any living space or in tropical and subtropical gardens. Tillandsias have striking and attractive flowers which can last up to three months in a range of colours.

Tillandsias tolerate a broad spectrum of light but are best kept away from full sun. They prefer warm temperatures and will tolerate temperatures down to 10 degrees Celsius. As epiphytes they are relatively drought tolerant which has made them a popular landscape plant in arid climates. Tillandsias only flower once then die off but new offsets will develop during flowering. Repot offsets in the spring.
