About

Our history

In the early years Marlborough Nursery operated from a single site at Wellington Point predominantly focused on growing palms for the retail supply chain in south east Queensland. After the initial stages of forming the business it became apparent that there was a large and unfulfilled market for high quality indoor foliage plants in Queensland and interstate.

This assessment led to the emphasis of the business shifting to the production of indoor foliage crops and away from the general palm market. Only a few varieties of palms were retained and continue to be produced. The business grew rapidly expanding production volume and market share.

Our history

In 1988, as part of this business expansion, Marlborough Nursery acquired twenty acres of land at Redland Bay for development into a second production site complimenting the business at Wellington Point through diversification of container and crop size. The site was developed over a five-year period and produced larger container size plant material under shade houses with some unprotected open ground production for hardy plant crops.

Marlborough Nursery was a founding partner of FUTURA PROMOTIONS a company that sourced and promoted new plant introductions into the Australian market during the 1990’s and early 2000’s.

In 2002 the adjoining properties to our Wellington Point site were developed for residential housing hemming in the business with suburban living just over the fence. This caused various problems for the sustainable continuation of a large production nursery in the middle of a residential estate therefore in 2006 the decision was made to relocate the whole operation to the Redland Bay site under a multi-million dollar redevelopment.

A building and relocation program was commenced in 2007 scheduled for completion over three years involving construction of 9,000sqm of climate controlled greenhouse production area, 25,000sqm of shade house production area, a modern office block and various production and dispatch buildings. This bought the total growing area to 50,000sqm or 5 hectares of protected cropping all completely consolidated on one site in early 2010.
